On September 29, 2026, the U.S. Department of Education formally repealed the 2024 Title IX regulations and restored the 2020 regulatory framework. The final rule, published in the Federal Register, updates the Code of Federal Regulations to reflect the Title IX rules already in effect.

This does not represent a new shift for institutions. After the 2024 regulations were vacated by a federal court in January 2025, the Department returned to enforcing the 2020 Title IX regulations.

What the September 2026 Title IX Update Means for Coordinators

For Title IX Coordinators, the September update provides greater clarity about which regulations are currently in effect. The official regulations now reflect the 2020 framework that institutions have been following since early 2025.

For institutions already operating under the 2020 framework, this update does not require a change in course. Title IX teams should continue operating under policies and procedures aligned with the 2020 Title IX regulations. Our trainings are also aligned with the 2020 regulations and have been since January 2025.
